Spotlights & Interviews

RaeAnn Turner – Fashion Designer

Hi I’m RaeAnn, my friends call me Rae. I was born in Taiwan and raised in Minnesota, which means I can withstand frigid winters, but I crave the sun. I’ve loved art since I was a kid. I graduated from BYU-I with a Graphic Design Degree and a minor in Clothing Construction. After graduating from BYU-I, I went on an art history tour of Europe, and moved to California (from which I miss the sun, beach, and my friends dearly). I then moved to Utah, where I met my husband Pete, and where I now work as a graphic designer. I do fashion design on the side and dream of starting my own business one day.

Tell us a little bit about your dresses & clothing you make.

My favorite things to make are dresses and especially wedding dresses. I would have to say my style is feminine and romantic. I love designing wedding dresses because you can go all out with the lace and sparkle. There’s a certain satisfaction that comes when dressing a woman on her very special day.

How did you learn how to sew?

I watched my mom sew dresses and halloween costumes for me and my sister when I was a kid. I kind of learned how to sew in a high school home economics class. We sewed a pillow and pajamas. And then I didn’t learn how to really sew until I went to college. I was a graphic design student at Brigham Young University Idaho and I started my Clothing Construction minor during my junior year.

What are some of your favorite things you’ve sewn?

I’d have to say my favorite things I’ve sewn are evening dresses and wedding dresses. I’ve sewn some wedding dresses last year for provo fashion week and my favorite dress was this modern, chic, ball gown that my best friend Caitlyn modeled for me.

What are some of your favorite sewing tips?

” A stitch in time will save 9.” I know its cheesy, but it basically means that if you slow down and take your time, you save yourself from making mistakes when you are in a hurry.

Do you ever listen to music while you sew?

I totally listen to music while I sew, it gets me going! So I actually made a personal playlist on spotify for when I’m sewing. Its called Project Runway by RaeAnn Harris.

Marchesa, Reem Acra, Zuhair Murad, Elie Saab, Ralph & Russo Haute Couture, Ashi Haute Couture, and Vera Wang

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Since I was in second grade, I knew that wanted to be an artist. I didn’t know what kind of artist I wanted to be, I just knew that art classes were my favorite.

Have you ever tutored or mentored anyone who wanted to learn how to sew?

I taught my best friend Nat how to patch ripped jeans. I am willing to teach anyone what I know.

What are some other creative things you enjoy doing?

I love my job as a graphic designer. I love creative problem solving. I enjoy typography, hand-lettering, DIY Pinterest projects, painting, and interior designing. I watch project runway religiously and  I binge-watch HGTV.

What is your favorite thing about being a creative woman?

I get a rush from creating and making things with my hands. I like making the world a beautiful place one project at a time. Sometimes for me, the journey of creation is just as exciting as the end results. My favorite thing about being creative is that it makes me feel alive.
